In 1951, the area code was split, with the southern half becoming area code 213. In 1957, the north-south split was reversed, with the 213 area code being assigned to the southern half of the state. In 1971, area code 310 was created for the western half of the 213 area, and in 1986, area code 818 was created for the eastern half of the 213 area. In 1991, area code 909 was created for the eastern portion of the 310 area code. In 1997, area code 626 was created for the eastern portion of the 818 area code. On February 13, 2008, area code 657 was split from area code 714, with the 714 area code being reassigned to the western portion of the 562 area code.
